Hello - I am organizing an off-shore race with 30-50 boats and was wondering if there is a technical solution to keeping track of each competitors position on a regular basis (2-3 times a day at least). Most boats will not have SSB radios, but I suspect most will have (or could rent) Iridium or Global star phones. Is there any alternative to having all skippers call in 2-3 times a day? Any way to automate the process somehow?
Tracking equipment is a must for offshore races keeping safety in mind. You don't need to track every boat but. Even in India, not every boat is tracked through some technology. But search and rescue is provided by the Navy.
I hope you will have your race covered with enough search and rescue arrangements. Make sure all boats carry VHF's. This should be enough for communication.
