2011 Star Class Western Hemisphere Championship Sailing Regatta Comes to the Land of Lincoln
Springfield, IL – The International Star Class Yacht Racing Association (ISCYRA) has
selected Lake Springfield and the Island Bay Yacht Club in Springfield, Illinois, as host of the
65th Western Hemisphere Championship regatta June 6 through June 11, 2011.
The annual Star Class Western Hemisphere Championship is raced in venues
throughout North and South America awarding a ―silver star‖ to the skipper and crew who
earns the best record of finishes in a series of races over the course of the week long event.
Competitors race a Star Class sailboat, which is 22-foot Olympic-class keelboat
celebrating a milestone 100 years of competitive racing in 2011. Past champions of the
Western Hemisphere Championship, which started in 1934, include America’s Cup veterans,
Olympic medalists and World Champions such as Dennis Connor of San Diego, Paul Cayard
of San Francisco, Lowell North of San Diego, John Kostecki of San Francisco, Vince Brun of
San Diego, Mark Reynolds of San Diego, Ross MacDonald of Vancouver, Eric Doyle of San
Diego and Mark Pickel of Germany.
The Island Bay Yacht Club has a historic association with the International Star Class
Yacht Racing Association. The club became a fleet charter member of ISCYRA when the
yacht club was first established in 1938. Island Bay’s Star fleet membership includes 1993
World Champion Joe Londrigan who first learned to sail on the inland waters of Lake
Springfield. Seven native sons of Springfield, Illinois, are lifetime ISCYRA members—more
than any other fleet in the world.
―The International Star Class is proud that the 2011 Western Hemisphere
Championship will be raced in the U.S. heartland and the city Abraham Lincoln called
home,‖ said Bill Allen, ISCYRA president. ―I have sailed many races on Lake Springfield and
know the competition will be strong and hospitality world class.‖
