Let's Go Back to Auckland
By Stuart Streuli at 2008-05-12 22:02

Or how about Perth? I've never been there but I've heard its lovely.

Earlier today justice Herman J. Cahn of the New York State Supreme Court issued the ruling that everyone in the world of sailing--or at least those who haven't tired of the legal battles surrounding the America's Cup--has been waiting for.

Maybe it's just me, but I have to think that few people could've predicted he would've picked March for the next America's Cup match.

Big Time Seattle NOOD
By SW Editor at 2008-05-06 21:03

Next week the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta series rolls into Seattle, and now that the entry late fee is in effect (sorry you procrastinators) the entry list has surpassed the 200-mark (as of today, 208). That's an awesome turnout for a first-time event on the national NOOD circuit, which incidentally started in Newport about this time 20 years ago). But what's more incredible than the boat tally is the diverse cross section of one-designs that stepped up to make it happen. There are few events out there today with a make-up like this one.

Regatta Management: Reflecting Industry Change
By Boyd at 2008-05-06 19:57

There’s become an expectation within society these days to be able to manage and do just about everything online: Dating, paying your taxes, grocery shopping, banking, buying concert tickets, and renting movies. People expect to do all of these things effortlessly, online, 24x7, with the click of a mouse. This same change is happening in the sailing industry too, albeit at a much slower pace.

A Field Trip to Maine
By Gary Jobson at 2008-05-05 18:07
I spent two days last week interviewing boatbuilders in Maine. After conducting 23 interviews at 11 different manufacturers, I came away ready to order a boat from each one. That's a little beyond my budget, however.

No More Waiting for the Shoe to Drop
By Dave Reed at 2008-04-22 02:14
There was a silent pause in my conversation with Ken Read as we sat in the fresh spring grass outside Goetz Custom Boats, in Bristol, R.I., as Puma Racing Team's new 70-footer hovered 20 feet off the ground, spot-lit in the late afternoon sun and suspended by the long arm of a yellow crane. Then he chuckled and pointed out the irony of how it was the sailors, not builders, standing on the deck. Just like that, they'd taken it over like a bunch of surfers taking new sticks from their shapers, eager to carve their first turns.

Sixty Times South of the Border
By Herb McCormick at 2008-04-17 13:25
Earlier this month, on April Fools Day, I had the distinct pleasure of sailing into Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, after a remarkably fast and incredibly enjoyable 800-mile ocean race from Newport Beach, California. I was sailing with skipper Glenn Highland and yacht designer Alan Andrews aboard the brand-new Andrews 39 Bien Roulée for a feature article to run in the June issue of Sailing World. The Corona del Mar (CDM)-Cabo Race was my first race south of the border, and it was a memorable one.

Celebrating Olin Stephens
By Gary Jobson at 2008-04-16 18:51
Olin Stephens celebrated his 100th birthday last weekend. To mark the milestone, I did a little digging to find out what some of the superstar sailors of Stephens' day had to say about this legendary yacht designer.

Clinton Crane, author of Yachting Memories:

"Sherman (Hoyt) and I watched Olin's development (since he was 14 or 15) as a designer and were much impressed with the thoughtfulness and originality of his work."

Sherman Hoyt, America's Cup veteran affiliated with Sparkman & Stephens:

The Money Trail
By Dave Reed at 2008-04-09 20:34

Grim news out of the International Monetary Fund, an international organization that provides financial assistance and advice to its member countries, which according to CNNMoney.com, says economic growth in the United States will "slow to a crawl of just 0.5% this year," making it the worst pace in 17 years. Apparently, the United States won't do any better next year either.
